New York Humanities Council – Reading & Discussion Program for Adults “Votes for Women.” Classes are held the last Thursday of each month at the Johnstown Public Library from 5:30 – 7:30pm. The program facilitator is Lauren Kozakiewicz, Ph.D.

African American Women in the Struggle for the Vote 1850-1920 By Rosalyn Terborg-Penn

We end the series with a discussion about race and suffrage with an eye to appreciating the contributions of African American women to the suffrage campaign.  The reading also gives participants exposure to the ways that race prevented these women from exercising this right of citizenship.
