First Saint John’s Church
Marker stands in front of the entrance to the colonial burying ground on Green Street, Johnstown. It was dedicated in 1940 as suggested by Historian John T. Morrison.
This marker, placed along the stone wall surrounding the old Colonial Cemetery, directs you to a large granite cross within the cemetery, believed to be the site of the first Anglican Church of England north of the Mohawk River. It was erected by Sir William Johnson in the early 1760’s as the house of worship for his new settlement of Johnstown. It was soon found to be too small and a second church was erected on the grounds of the present St. John’s Church.
