The Glove Performing Arts Center’s production for September is Reefer Madness directed by Mark Joseph Peek on September 22- October 1 at 8PM October 2 at 2PM General Admission $15. Students & Seniors $12.
Reefer Madness is a musical satire of the 1936 cult classic Reefer Madness that opened in Los Angeles in 1998. The book and lyrics were written by Kevin Murphy and the book and music by Dan Studney. Directed by Andy Fickman, it was initially shown at the Hudson Theater on Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles and then moved to the New York “Off-Broadway” scene. The show opened Off Broadway on September 15, 2001, and closed shortly thereafter. Rodgers and Hammerstein Theatricals now administers the stock/amateur rights, and the show has been produced by local theater groups in several cities, including Toronto, Seattle, Philadelphia, Charleston, Sacramento, Raleigh, and London. The 2008 production at Washington, D.C.’s Studio Theater won two Helen Hayes Awards. It tells the story of Bill, Mary, Gwen, and Jimmy are all swell kids. They listen to their parents, do well in school, and help out around the community — that is, until they get caught up in the marijuana sub culture. With “Mary Jane” filling their lungs, these kids resort to theft, prostitution, and murder to satisfy their cravings, which leads to suicide and death sentences. Is one puff really too much? A hilarious send-up of the 1936 exploitation film, now a cult classic. ADULT CONTENT. R&H Theatricals Amateur Theatrical Presentation 229 West 28th Street, 11th floor.
